Character Study

Hello, My Writing Colleague,

This week’s assignment is to create a character study.

Take an old-fashioned pen and notebook out somewhere with you like the mall, a park, the beach, a coffee shop, anywhere where you can people watch.

Settle in and find someone in the crowd who piques your interest.

Take notes on what they are wearing, their body language, and facial expressions. Jot down what you think they are talking about or thinking. Imagine who they might be in life, i.e., a paralegal who likes to weave baskets in her spare time.

This exercise should be quick and covert.

You could make a couple of different people watching stops.

After you are back home, write a scene with that character.

Feel free to create as many characters as you need to fill your current or future work in progress.
